Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Black Canyon Fantasy Colorado - 060501_000116-T

Narrow, deep, and shear describe the walls of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This also explains the name of this national monument: the walls are so narrow and deep that sunlight reaches the river at the bottom a few hours each day, leaving the canyon walls shadowed the rest of the time.

Dropping nearly 100 feet per mile, the Gunnison river provides an opportunity for hardy, very advanced, white water rafters to test their skills. The steep canyon walls provide a serious challenge to rock climbers.
